Art Art Show culture Making Cross Content Connections

Art Mini-Unit: Part 3 A Visit to the “Art Museum”

The third day of my Art Mini-Unit was used to pre-teach vocabulary for attending the art show. You can download the presentation here (please let me know when you catch an error!). I pondered using only Spanish and Latino artists, but decided to include Monet because my students might be familiar with some of his works. (Plus I have a great story about a waiter in Giverny, France who will “never forget my smile…!” that I  shared for a few laughs.)  Feel free to download the presentation and alter it to your needs. It is only 6 or 7 slides. And we used the entire class period to go over them. No rush, just circling and asking personalized questions about each slide. I also had students write down answers first so they had something to say when I called on them.

The second to last slide is questions that I used as speaking prompts.

We did not get to the last slide that links to an infographic about Salvador Dalí.

A Visit to the “Art Museum”

The following day, we arrived in the Art Room to find so many wonderful pieces of artwork!
After walking around for a few minutes, students sat down with the art and completed this paper.
I slightly altered a paper from Annmarie Chase to fit my class’ needs. Her ideas are so creative! Thank you so much for sharing with me Annmarie!
When we returned to class, we discussed which pieces were our favorites, which we would purchase, and which ones we thought were the most unique, interesting, or weird. We also discussed the fact that we had NO IDEA so many students in our building were so creative! As well as “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” This actually pushed us into the realm of “Spanglish” so that we could adequately express what we had learned. I was OK with this, since we had new insights to share.
This was a fun mini-unit that made some cross content connections and hopefully broadened our world view a bit. We all agreed that we need to do it again next year!
You can read about parts one and two here.
