Teaching content and culture through proficiency-driven instruction

Señora Jota Jota with ‘Steve the Alien.’

Hi! I’m JJ Epperson, a high school Spanish teacher from Southern Indiana. I began teaching high school after a long hiatus (more than 20 years!) of not using Spanish at all. When I entered the classroom, I had to re-acquire all my language skills. I quickly became frustrated with using and teaching from a textbook because my language skills simply were not progressing. Then I went to a TPRS workshop that literally changed my professional life. I jumped into teaching with Comprehensible Input with both feet and have never looked back!

PRESENTER

I am a frequent presenter at the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers’ Association (IFLTA) annual conference. I am also active in the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, CI Midwest, Indiana’s NELL chapter, and more. I presented on using theatre in the world language classroom in Granada, Spain in Fall 2017 and again in New Harmony, Indiana at the Contemporary Spanish Theatre Conference in 2018.

SOCIAL MEDIA

In the Spring of 2018, I began hosting the Southern Indiana Teaching with Comprehensible Input professional learning community at my school once per month. Find us on Facebook!

My Philosophy

My passion is teaching Spanish through culture and content using comprehensible input. I share my successes and failures in hopes of offering assistance to others along their own CI journey. Thanks for reading my blog! Please reach out and share your successes and challenges. I’d love to hear from you!

My Why

It is my firm belief that all humans deserve to be seen and heard. My goal as an educator is to form meaningful relationships where I can model kindness to empower, inspire, and encourage others to find the common bonds that link us to other humans.
