Social Emotional Learning
I have always focused on building relationships in my classroom. In fact, it’s no secret that I’m much better at building relationships than I will ever be at finer details of Spanish grammar! However, this past year, it became clear that I needed to make space for Social Emotional Learning. I started with simple surveys in the early days of the pandemic. This fall those surveys turned into classroom conversations and making space for a variety of ways for student expression. It even meant that on occasion, we have scrapped the lesson and spent the class period the significance of world events and how they affected each of us individually.
Music
It’s also no secret that I love to use music in my classroom. From cloze activities to vocabulary introduction to culture ~ and everything in between. I can find a way to fit music into just about any lesson.
Social Emotional Learning and Music
It should come as no surprise that I’ve been searching for a way for my level 1’s and 2’s to relate to music in the context of Social Emotional Learning. This level is tricky because they don’t have a lot of L2 under their belts and they just don’t have the ability to express their complex emotions. That doesn’t mean we should ignore emotions at this level. Far from it! We need ways to introduce useful vocabulary so they can talk about feelings, even if they have to use their L1 to supplement.
Imagine my joy when I stumbled across this adorable song from Monsieur Periné and Pedro Capó!
I immediately set to work and came up with this lesson that you can find on my new TPT store!
This lesson includes:
- an introduction to the artists and the countries they are from
- short embedded readings based on the introductions
- a level 1 and 2 cloze activity
- a music scavenger hunt inspired by my amazing friend Abby Whicker (blog coming soon!!)
- an SEL activity
- and a poem writing/drawing activity.
I’d love your feedback!
Happy teaching!
