Teaching content and culture through proficiency-driven instruction

**The resources shared in this post are FREE and are based (with permission) on Bryce Hedstrom´s La Llorona books which can be purchased here**

These resources are for level 2/3.

The 2nd nine weeks of school is one of my favorites to teach – the air starts to turn crisp, the leaves have an abundance of color, and I start to think about all things spooky! One of my most favorite spooky folktales is La Llorona. I have a blast teaching and acting with students. This is a lesson that I definitely use my TPRS storyasking skills – it is so compelling that students eat it up. I purchased Bryce Hedstrom’s Embedded Readings several years ago and over the years I have added a variety of activities. This year I decided to spruce them up a bit, because, you know, I like to pretend that I’m not as exhausted as I truly am.
I began with a new slideshow which you can download here. It is complete with vocab pre-teaching slides and schema activating activities.
**The story of La Llorona is NOT in these slides. You need to purchase that separately from Bryce Hedstrom’s website**

Then I added a Drag-n-Drop ordering activity that you can download here. I plan to use it as a quick quiz or a bell ringer. Students will drag the ordinal numbers to the correct statement.
Then I got really ambitious and made stations digital notebook style. You can download a copy here.
These stations include listening, drawing, writing, close reading, evaluating, interpreting and more. They can be assigned easily in Google Classroom and students can work on them in either teacher-led pacing or self-paced (which is how I plan to use them).
**A note about the stations: I do include the scary movie trailer as an OPTIONAL station. It is pretty scary, so I would warn your students about it in advance and allow them to skip it altogether if they just don’t like horror films**

And finally, I created an exit quiz. You can make a copy here. In fact, I would make several copies and just change the answers. That way you have something already made up and ready to go on any class day.

Again, you will need a copy of Bryce’s original resources in order for my free resources to be of any use to you. But believe me, they are well worth the price. You students will be super engaged and you will have a lot of fun together!
I hope these resources are helpful to you.
Happy teaching!
