Teaching content and culture through proficiency-driven instruction

One of my favorite things to do is expand on a music video to create a cultural lesson. My students love music videos! Thanks to March Music Madness (and here) my students are bopping around school at dress rehearsals and sports practices to Spanish language music. And thanks to Kristy Placido’s creative lessons, the track team requested I play Yo voy gana’o before their most recent meet! And the baseball and tennis teams told me they stopped, danced, and sang at their practices when they heard it. CI for the win!

I started with this lesson: (click the image to go to Kristy’s TPT store)
Yo Voy Gana'o Spanish Song Activities Packet

It includes an embedded reading. The video is so rich, however, that I wanted to go a little deeper. So, I did some research and created this lesson that includes natural resources, geography, and more:

You can download the presentation here.

Here are some photos of my students doing a Volleyball Translation of the embedded reading. I really like using the volleyball method when the reading is a new context of the vocabulary and structures we have just acquired. It is the perfect way to check for comprehension and I walk around the room listening to students interact.

This song is a great hook for the book La Vampirata by Mira Canion, so I used it to pre-teach key vocabulary. This book is amazing! So many scenes to act out and engaging activities in the Teacher’s Guide!

I created this lesson for my levels 2’s, but my 3’s have been asking if I will do it with them, also. They want to know the words so they can sing at track meets!
